The Common Thread Circle
The Common Thread Circle is a contemplative group practice developed by Evan L. Rees that draws from ancient contemplative traditions and modern meditative disciplines.

This group practice is a modern adaptation of the ancient contemplative discipline known as Lectio Divina. Originating within early Christian monastic communities, Lectio Divina—literally “sacred reading”—was developed as a slow, reflective way of engaging sacred texts. Rather than analyzing scripture intellectually, practitioners read brief passages aloud, allow space for silence, and listen inwardly for insight, guidance, or transformation. Over centuries it became one of the central contemplative practices of Christian mysticism because it encourages participants to move beyond doctrine and into direct interior awareness. In my adaptation, I retain the essential structure of short sacred readings followed by reflective silence, but expand the scope beyond a single tradition by drawing from the wisdom literature of multiple spiritual lineages.
This approach is also deeply informed by the meditative traditions of Buddhism, particularly its emphasis on disciplined attention, shared silence, and the cultivation of awareness within a community setting. Buddhist practice has long demonstrated that stillness and mindful listening can reveal insight that is not available through analysis alone. By combining the contemplative reading structure of Lectio Divina with the meditative attentiveness found in Buddhist practice, this process creates a powerful group container where participants listen not only to the text, but also to the deeper intelligence that emerges through silence, reflection, and shared presence. The result is a spiritually credible and highly effective group practice that allows people from many backgrounds to experience the common thread that runs through the world’s wisdom traditions.
Way of Council Practice
The Way of Council Practice is facilitated by Evan L. Rees, a recognized Carrier of Council at the highest level of attainment. This practice draws directly from the ancestral and contemporary lineages of council, honoring its deep history while making it accessible for modern group practice.
The Way of Council is a sacred group process with roots in ancient circle traditions, revitalized through contemporary teachings.
As a Carrier of Council, I facilitate this practice in alignment with its rigorous lineage, ensuring integrity, safety, and the transformative potential of the circle is preserved. The structure invites participants to enter a space of presence, attentive listening, and authentic expression, where each voice is held with respect and care.
At the heart of the practice are four core intentions, cultivated in every circle:
Share from the heart – speak openly and sincerely from your own experience.
Listen from the heart – receive each voice fully and without judgment.
Be of lean expression – speak concisely, allowing space for others.
Be authentic – honor your truth with clarity and integrity.
Engaging in the Way of Council offers participants a profound opportunity for connection, insight, and collective clarity. Through guided practice, the circle becomes a container for shared reflection, personal growth, and heightened awareness. It is a space where presence, trust, and intention converge to create a deeply nourishing and spiritually compelling group experience.
